Private James Harrison

The background of this North Irish Horseman is not known at present. It is possible, however, that he was the James Harrison shown on the Presbyterian Church in Ireland Roll of Honour as living at Cromkill, Ballymena, County Antrim. That in turn would suggest he was the man shown in the 1911 Census as living at Crebilly, Ballyclug, aged 18, the third of nine children of foundry labourer James Harrison and his wife Jane (née Wilson).

Harrison enlisted in the North Irish Horse between 31 August and 2 September 1916 (No.2259). He trained at the regiment's Antrim reserve depot before embarking for France in 1917, where he was posted to one of the squadrons of the 1st North Irish Horse Regiment.

In February or March 1918 Harrison was transferred to the Tank Corps (No.309002). If he was the man from Cromkill, the Presbyterian Church in Ireland Roll of Honour states that he was a driver in the Tank Corps, and was gassed.
